Karuppu Kavuni Sakara Pongal
Karuppu Kavuni Rice Sweet Pongal – A Traditional Delight with a Nutritious Twist
Sakkarai Pongal is a beloved South Indian sweet, especially popular among Tamil culture. It is usually prepared using white rice. However, in this version, we’re going to use Karuppu Kavuni Rice a heritage grain rich in nutrients to make this sweet dish both flavorful and healthy.
Ingredients:
- Black Kavuni Rice – 1 cup (Soak for 4 hours or overnight)
- Moong Dal (Yellow Split Lentils) – 2 tablespoons
- Jaggery – ¾ cup (adjust to taste)
- Tender Coconut Water or Plain Water – 3 cups
- Ghee – 2 tablespoons
- Cashew Nuts – 10
- Raisins – optional
- Cardamom – 4 (powdered)
- Edible Camphor – a pinch (optional)
Preparation Method
- Wash the soaked Karuppu kavuni rice and moong dal thoroughly. Cook them together in 3 cups of water until soft. You can use a pressure cooker (4-5 whistles) for faster cooking.
- Melt the jaggery in a little water, strain it to remove impurities.
- Add the strained jaggery syrup to the cooked rice-dal mixture. Mix well and let it boil for 5 minutes so the flavors combine.
- Stir in the cardamom powder and a pinch of edible camphor if using.
- In a small pan, heat the ghee, roast the cashews and raisins, and pour it over the pongal.
- Serve hot and enjoy the richness.
